“That’s Really Super, Supergirl”

CoIE

Back in the fall of 1985, comic fans were shocked when in the 7th issue of Crisis of Infinite Earths, Supergirl was killed, sacrificing herself to save the universe.  In 1986, XTC released the spectacular album Skylarking, which includes the fantastic song, “That’s Really Super Supergirl,” the speaker of which is despondent over his realization that Supergirl’s love is not only for him, but that “she could be on a mission saving some other man.”  The key lyric in that song for me, however is “How you stopped the universe from dyin’,” which is clearly an allusion to the Crisis crossover mini-series.  The fact that XTC’s alter-ego band, The Dukes of Stratosphear wrote songs like “Brainiac’s Daughter” that makes reference to things like the Kryptonian Bottle City of Kandor leads me to further believe this is the case as it demonstrates familiarity with some of the more obscure geeky aspects of DC Comics’ Superman oeuvre.
